Toby Hood Takes Peel Race at Rockingham

Alex Williamson take first in C grade with a solo breakaway

47 riders attended the weekend’s racing heldby the Peel District Cycling Club at the Smeaton Way circuit in Rockingham.

First off were 4 juniors doing a 4 lap race. Harry Lee-Kelly proved best on the day and took a close win from Ethan McConnachie followed in by Todd and Jake Brown.

E grade were next away with 9 riders who quickly split into groups. Then race was won in a fine tussle between Mark Glorie and Neil Andresen with Glorie having the edge. Both riders have served their apprenticeships well and will be promoted to D grade.

The mixed A and B grades were third of the blocks and bulked out with 3 visiting riders.

One of these, Toby Hood, won the race in a sprint finish from Mark Roberts and fellow visitor Thomas Unicomb.

Dave Berglund was fourth over the line followed in by Steven Greenshields and Andrew Crack. C grade were next away and provided the usual interesting riding. About 2 laps before the bell junior rider Alex Williamson made a solo breakaway effort and put 200 metres into the field.

Williamson held on to the tenuous lead until the bell and just held it until the line with the pack catching rapidly. An excellent ride.

The D grade race came down to a sprint finish with Rob Ramirez taking a clear victory from Haydon Thorpe and Tom Russell. Russell was competing for the first time in 8 weeks following a nasty spill after touching his partner’s wheel in a 2-up time trial.
