
Close to ninety riders took a chance on the weather Saturday and were rewarded with fine conditions in which to race the Dog Hill circuit in Baldivis. The circuit is around, not over Dog Hill, so there is no climbing involved, which pleases many riders.
The juniors were first away and in a tight contest it was Lowen Ferry first, Jake Brown second and Ari Zuvela third.
The first grade to finish were E with John Chambers winning the bunch sprint from Zoe Stolton second and Ken Portman third.
D grade went out hard on the first lap and shed a few riders. The pace then eased and tactics can into play, with attacks and counter attacks. The bunch stayed together and race ended in a bunch sprint with the judges awarding the win to Frank Wittwer by the narrowest of margin from Rob Mold with John Bywater third.
C grade with twenty riders appeared to be heading for a bunch sprint, as any attacks were quickly covered. With a lap to go, two riders got off the front and the chase was on. With less than a kilometer to go, the two were caught. Paul Zuvela won the bunch sprint, from Tim Boardman second and Steve Reilly third.
B grade saw a attentive bunch counter ever move. Riders attacked, but never got away. The bunch sprint was won by Paul Lee, from Nigel Stella second and Martin Clarke third.
In contrast A grade, saw Matthew Upton and Ryan Wilmott escape early in the race and they were not chased down. With Upton winning the sprint from Wilmott. Luke Pledger snuck off the front with a lap to got snare third place. With Doug Stewart taking the sprint out of the bunch for fourth.
The senior riders now get a two week break, as Peel District Cycling Club hosts the best junior riders in Western Australia at the Peel Junior Tour at the Kwinana Motorplex from 9am next Saturday.
