The 90 riders racing last Saturday at Casuarina started in the rain and wind. While the rain stopped shortly after the start, the wind remained a constant challenge for the riders, causing problems for smaller groups and individuals.
E grade rode together until the third lap, when the bunch split in two. It was the youngest rider racing Campbell McDowell taking the reduced bunch sprint from the second youngest rider Vanessa Baker, with Michelle Baker third.
A fast first lap saw the D grade bunch halved in number, again it was junior riders taking out the first two places in the reduced bunch sprint, with Nicholas Bolt taking the win, Sally Carter second and Zoe Stolton third.
With 28 riders, C grade was the biggest bunch on the day. While they dropped a few riders, the bunch stayed intact and in the bunch sprint it was a masters rider Alastair Evan taking the win from junior Ryley Collet with Darren Lee third.
B grade was an attacking aggressive race, 16 riders started and after 7 laps only 10 riders contested the bunch finish, with Matthew Wardynec first, Jack Lightfoot second and Shanon Sime third.
A grade was another attacking race, just over halfway through the the nine lap race Brian Sing and Jay Lindorff had managed to establish a small break. A lap later the pair were joined by Oliver Bleddyn and Ali Milne. The four worked well together to keep their small lead. Even on the final lap when Lindorff was dropped the remaining three held off the charging bunch with Bleddyn taking the win with Sing second and an exhausted Milne third.
